If The World Ran Out Of Gas, What Would You Drive?
It seems that America's idiotic war with Iran won't be calming down anytime soon, which means our energy crisis is only going to keep getting worse. Right now the price of gas is the real killer, both for regular 'ol civilians and mega corporations in air travel and shipping industries. The national average price of gas rose to $4.53 yesterday, though crude oil futures at least saw a decline. That's bad news for anyone no matter what sort of car you drive, Corolla or Chiron — unless, of course, you're a smart person who already owns an EV.
We've previously asked you what cars should become popular after high gas prices kill the SUV craze, and you've shared the driving habits you've changed now that gas is so expensive. For today's question, let's go a bit more Mad Max with it. I want to know what you would drive if there was no gas left in the world. Just for the purposes of this thought experiment, let's say everything else about your life is basically the same, there just isn't any gas left. Zip. Zero. Nada. None. You can't just make your own gas in your garage, either. What are you gonna drive?
I'd EV swap my car
I think I would keep my 2006 Mercedes-Benz CLS500 and convert it to be an EV. Sure, I would miss its silky-smooth naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8, but I'd honestly be happy not to deal with filling it up anymore — in everyday driving I get about 12 mpg. In fact, I would love to EV swap it now if I could, regardless of whether or not gas still exists. I think it would be very well suited to electrification.
Alternatively, I'd buy a used BMW i3. I've already thought about doing that anyway because I simply love them, and it would be the ideal Los Angeles city car. Or maybe I'd lease something new, like a Hyundai Ioniq 5. I'd need at least another couple years of depreciation to hit before I would nab a used EV like a Porsche Taycan or BMW iX, but those would also be quite enticing with no gas left in the world.
What about you, dear reader? If there was suddenly no more gasoline, what are you going to drive? (Or ride, or use, if those would be the proper terminology for your mode of transportation of choice.) I'll round up my favorite answers next week.
