Ten Things We Won't Allow In Our Cars

You have to draw the line somewhere. By all means, get comfortable and enjoy the ride, but don't even think about doing any of these commenter chosen things inside one of our cars. You'll have to call a cab.

This is Answers of the Day — a feature where we take the best ten responses from the previous day's Question of the Day and shine it up to show off. It's by you and for you, the Jalopnik readers. Enjoy!

10. Backseat Driving

Suggested By: The Second Spitter

Why It's Annoying: Look, if I'd wanted you to help navigate, I would have thrown you a map. And if I'd wanted your opinion on when to merge, you'd be driving. But you're not driving. You're not even in the front passenger seat of the car. So shut up, and chill out. I got this.

9. Whining

Suggested By: stuntdriver

Why It's Annoying: Whining, whether it's about speed, music selection, climate control or backseat buddy, is not allowed. At all. Ever. There's nothing more annoying than trying to keep the car on the road and having to field complaints and "suggestions" from the backseat. Just shut up and hold on.

8. Wet Bathing Suits

Suggested By: GasGuzzler

Why It's Annoying: Not only is it uncomfortable for whomever is wearing the wet bathing suit, it's horrible for the car's interior. All that nasty pool water, or salty ocean water, getting mashed into the seats, mixing with the dye and making the car smell like chlorine or low tide... I shudder just thinking about it.

7. Not Wearing A Seat Belt

Suggested By: Hopman

Why It's Annoying: Seat belts are always required in my car, and should be in everyone else's, too. They are not optional. Any time the gearshift goes out of neutral, that belt better be buckled. If you're already sitting in my car, chances are that I like having you around, and it'd be a bummer to have to scrape you off the inside of the windshield should anything go wrong.

6. Animals

Suggested By: Jim-Bob wants a Yaris

Why It's Annoying: I'm certainly a fan of our four-legged friends, just not in my car. Between paws and claws that scratch up trim and upholstery, fur shed onto seats, and the smell that just won't go away, they can ride with someone else. I'll play with them when we get there.

5. Messing With The Radio

Suggested By: noursegod

Why It's Annoying: Do. Not. Touch. The. Radio. My car, my tunes. Unless permission to change the radio station, CD, or iPod is explicitly granted, any fingers near the buttons are subject to removal. You have been warned.

4. Smoking

Suggested By: arozzi

Why It's Annoying: It'll kill you, but I'll probably kill you first if you light up in the car. The smell never goes away, and after a while, the interior gets cruddy from the smoke deposits of a thousand cigarettes. And even if you were gonna ash out the window, who wants to do that in the middle of winter?

3. Messy Food

Suggested By: lonewolf9039

Why It's Annoying: If it's greasy, crumbly, liquid, gooey, or anything that's not bite-sized, keep it out. And especially if it's durian, the South Asian fruit that smells like footcanceraliendeath. (People have gotten kicked out of hotels and off public transportation for having the stuff, so there's no way it's getting in a car.) The same goes for your drippy, greasy pizza and the ready-to-get-crushed Goldfish crackers the kids want in the back seat.

2. Feet on the Dashboard

Suggested By: mkbruin

Why It's Annoying: I'm glad I'm not the only one who has a problem with passengers putting their feet up on the dashboard. It looks incredibly sloppy, not to mention the horrible outcome if the car was to get in an airbag-deploying accident. Keep 'em on the floor mats, folks.

1. Moving the Mirrors

Suggested By: Hooker

Why It's Annoying: Do I move all your furniture around whenever I come over to your house? Then why would you do it in my second home? We spend so much time in our cars, they have to be comfortable, familiar places. But when someone's moved the seat or repositioned all the mirrors, it's like you got in the wrong one.
