Ford Can Send You A Car Over The Internet Now, Some Assembly Required
The new "Ford 3D Store" has downloadable 3D-printer files so you can make your own F-150 Raptor, Shelby GT350R, Focus ST, or Fiesta ST at home in whatever scale or substance you want!
So you can either buy a pre-printed model of one of those cars, or go crazy with their ever-expanding selection of printable files.
Ford's licensing manager Mark Bentley says; "3D printing at home is a growing trend, and it makes sense for us to offer our customers a chance to make their own 3D Ford models. At Ford we're using 3D printing every day to rapidly prototype parts, and now we want to share that fun with our fans."
Translation; "We could, why not!" Cute marketing campaign, call me when you can download a supercharger?
This is a neat advertising exercise, proving once again that Ford has really gotten great at shilling themselves. But it's also an exciting harbinger of the future of parts buying. If Ford can sell scale-toys for you to replicate at home... of course you've got a 3D printer right? Yeah I've never even seen one, but maybe we'll see the day you can buy OEM trim pieces and have them in your hands without ever paying for shipping or stepping inside AutoZone!
In the more near future this could be huge for nerds like myself who love collecting and customizing small-scale cars. You know who you are.
A company called TurboSquid that does 3D modeling for video games will actually be executing product-delivery, with a library of "1,000 unique, licensed digital images of Ford products" to pick from.
