Chevy Will Build 69 COPO Camaros This Year

Although we suspected Chevrolet would join in the factory spec drag racing fun after they showed and track tested the COPO Camaro concept late last year, this past week they made it official. The company plans to build 69 COPO Camaros in 2012—the same amount of legendary COPO ZL1s that left the factory in 1969.

The COPO Camaros will not be street legal, but are designed to terrorize Ford's Cobrajet and Dodge's Challenger Drag Pack on the track in NHRA's Super Stock and Stock Eliminator Classes . Starting price for the COPO will be $89,000 and they will certainly get significantly more expensive from there.

Three engines will be offered in the COPO—An LS7 based 7.0 liter 427ci V8, a LSX based 5.3 liter 327ci V8 with a 2.9 liter supercharger, and a LSX based 5.3 liter 327ci V8 with a 4.0 liter supercharger. Don't worry if you can't decide which engine to put in your COPO, Chevrolet will be offering a collector's package which will allow high dollar collectors to purchase the car with all three engines—one installed and the other two in crates delivered with the car.

The first examples of this limited run of "the quickest Camaros ever offered by Chevrolet" are expected to be delivered early this summer.
