Weekend Motorsports Roundup, Oct. 31-Nov. 1, 2015
Welcome to the Jalopnik Weekend Motorsports Roundup, where we let you know what's going on in the world of racing, where you can see it, and where you can talk about it all in one convenient place. Where else would you want to spend your weekend?
We have got a fun weekend ahead of us, folks. And I'm not talking about Halloween — skip the candy collecting and just buy your own so you don't have to miss all of the racing this weekend.
Formula One didn't have too far to travel for its next event, as the series heads down from Texas to Mexico City for the Mexican Grand Prix at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez circuit. Lewis Hamilton took the race win and his third-career F1 championship in the United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas last Sunday, right before he and Mercedes AMG teammate Nico Rosberg had a bit of a scuffle with ...hat throwing. Yes, we're all as confused as the rest of you as to why they chose this particular path to voice their dislike for each other. Bonus points for entertainment value, though.
Wait, never mind — Hamilton doesn't need any extra points. He's already won the championship a few races early.
F1 isn't the only place where folks are a bit on edge — Kevin Harvick caused a debate in the NASCAR camp at Talladega Superspeedway last weekend over whether his late-race move that caused a caution was intentional or not. NASCAR officials ruled to give Harvick no penalties for it on Tuesday. The move ended the race with Joey Logano in the lead, which means Logano swept the entire second round of the Chase for the Sprint Cup (and we thought Hamilton wins a lot! Oh wait, he does). Luckily for the entertainment value of the Chase, the points reset as we start the new round.
The Camping World Truck Series joins the Sprint Cup Series race at Martinsville Speedway this weekend, and the Xfinity Series guys are off until Texas Motor Speedway next week. Truck races at Martinsville never seem to disappoint, so that's one to tune into — or add to the DVR list — on Saturday.
There's a pretty good variety of racing this weekend, too. Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing and V8 Supercars get a bit more air time than usual, with more than one (delayed) event showing from each series — including another replay of the Bathurst 1000. Tape-delayed motocross, World Rally Championship and Lamborghini races are on the list, as well as live showings of NHRA's fifth of six championship rounds and the penultimate FIA World Endurance Championship race of the season.
