These Automakers Have Never Made A Bad Car, According To You

From Honda to Koenigsegg, these are the car companies that you think have been all killer and no filler.

There are a lot of different car companies building a lot of different cars. So it stands to reason that all of them have, probably, at some point had at least one off day and built a bad car, right?

To find out if this was true, we turned to you and asked for your picks for the car companies that disprove this rule and have never built a bad car. Thankfully, you came back with some great suggestions.

So sit back, relax and flick through our gallery of the automakers that have never built a bad car. And if you can think of one we've missed out, let us know in the comments below.

TVR

"TVR never made a bad car. Insanely dangerous cars, yes. Often unreliable and bizarre cars... but bad? Nah. TVR made TVR cars, and they were all awesome... if you survived the drive."

Well, that's one way to look at it.

Duesenberg

"You pump out thousands or millions of cars, you will produce some turds, Large scale manufacturing doesn't keep its building processes that consistent that well over time to have never produced turkeys. It's inevitable.

"So it'd have to be a low-volume manufacturer and I go with Duesenberg.

"If you've ever watched car restoration shows at the care they put in building them, that's exactly what Duesenberg did with their models where they made sure every detail was correct."

Honda

"I hate to say it, but...has Honda ever made a bad car? Sure, they make a lot of unremarkable, extremely reliable cars, and every now and then have some fun ones (S2000, JDM Honda NSX, etc.), but off the top of my head, I can't think of a bad car they've made, one that would turn people from Honda."

Unremarkable and sometimes fun is exactly the vibe I go for.

McLaren

"McLaren Automotive. They've produced a fairly large number of very competent and often times stunning supercars over the past 24 years. None of them are even remotely 'bad' in any way. The Senna may not be my cup of tea stylistically, but it's still an amazing car.

"You're really not going to answer this question with mainstream companies with wider product portfolios that have been around for 100 years. If they existed in the 70s and 80s, there's a good chance they produced something that was objectively crappy.

"I think Honda (as someone else mentioned) is probably the closest. Though I think the Crosstour was officially bad. Terribly ugly and so unpopular it only lasted 5 years."

Mclaren was the first supercar maker to earn a hat tip here, interesting.

Saab

"Saab. Sure, some were better than others. Some were more Saab-like than others. But none of them were bad."

This was very nearly my initial suggestion to kick off this whole debate. Saab is a good pick for an automaker with no misses.

Volvo

"I'm nominating Volvo and Saab* — both makers always delivered vehicles that were just a bit ahead of the mainstream, and as far as a I know there's never been a real stinker that let down the faithful. From the Sonnet to the 99 to the 9-5 and all the cool Volvos, each respectfully kicked in a door.

"*Until GM got ahold of them and produced that badge-engineered Trailblazer SUV, but I say that doesn't count."

And apparently you can't praise one Swedish automaker without a hat tip to the other.

Jaguar

"Jaguar has built some unreliable cars, they've built a few unremarkable cars (looking at you E Pace), but there's nothing that strikes me as truly bad (or at least possessing enough charm to overlook a few quibbles)."

This feels like it's opening a can of worms, but do you mean Jaguar or Jaguar Land Rover?

Apple

"They never made a bad car... or any car, but they did call themselves a car company for a long time."

Well, that's one way to go about this.

Shelby American

"As others have said, any large volume manufacturer is going to have bad ones.

"There's even Ferrari's out there, that people aren't dying to add to their collections. (Ferrari Mondial, anyone?)

"So, I'll go with a cop-out answer, and say Shelby American.

"The only cars they built themselves were the Cobras, Daytonas, and later the Series 1.

"They mostly just make performance versions of other manufacturer's cars. So, even though things like the 1986 Dodge Daytona Turbo Z C/S exist, they aren't Shelby creations. They were simply hired to polish up the cars, and did they best they could, with what they had to work with.

"I mean, even though the base cars were crap, the Shelby enhanced ones were always slightly less crappy versions."

Just because it's a cop-out, that doesn't mean it's an incorrect cop-out.

Austin Healey

"This is a tough one, because bad is wildly subjective. I don't really think Honda or Toyota ever made a bad car. Perhaps boring. And lacking emotion. And decades of building reasonably priced appliances for the masses.

"I think the requirement is picking a small maker. But that introduces another issue with bad. Because that would inevitably include unreliable – but that's sometimes half the charm of the small makers.

"So, for me, I go with Austin Healey, who made some of the most absolutely gorgeous quintessential British sports cars of all time. But they are not safe. Or reliable. Or fast. Or any of the things we think of when we think of a "good" car. So... not sure it really works!

"But man. Look at that thing."

Is style over substance allowed in a list of good carmakers? This poster certainly thinks so.

Lotus

"Has Lotus ever made a bad car? clunky and sometimes unreliable sure, but bad? I don't think so, even though I don't like that silly little crossover."

Ah! Another small British sports car maker, I know just what to do with you.

Koenigsegg

"Has Koenigsegg ever made a bad car? I can't really say since I've never had a paycheck big enough to even dream of owning one, but I can't really think of one that didn't at least look and sound like it would be distinctly not bad."

Today I learned that Koenigsegg has made 10 different cars, which swells to 21 if you could special-editions and upgrade models. That's more than I thought.

Audi

"I came to say that Aston has not built anything bad but then I remembered the Cygnet....

"So the answer to me is Audi. They've built some boring cars but those are still good."

How dare you, the Cygnet is a perfect car. And Audi is alright too, I guess.
