These Are The Most Fuel-Efficient Cars, Trucks And SUVs According To Consumer Reports [UPDATE]
When you're shopping for a new car, price and practicality are important, but so is fuel economy. The Environmental Protection Agency provides fuel economy ratings for almost every vehicle currently on sale, but how does that translate to real life? Our friends over at Consumer Reports independently test new cars to see what kind of fuel economy they actually get in the real world and recently published a guide to the cars that perform the best in that particular test.
It's broken down by category, and the top vehicles were judged based on the category they're in, so getting 25 mpg would be considered impressive for a truck but not for a midsize car. We've also only included the top five finishers for each segment even if Consumer Reports included more entries on its list. Now, let's take a look at what made the list.
[Update: Because this list shows Consumer Reports' real-world observed fuel economy, any vehicles that it hasn't tested itself were not included.]
Electric Compact Cars
- Kia Niro Electric EX – 113 MPGe
- Nissan Leaf SL Plus – 104 MPGe
The Kia Niro went through a major redesign recently and it's an excellent little hatchback that's also offered as a hybrid or plug-in hybrid. While the Nissan Leaf is old, doesn't have a lot of range and has the annoying CHAdeMO charging port, it is one of the cheapest EVs on sale.
Subcompact Cars
- Mitsubishi Mirage ES – 37 mpg
- Nissan Versa SV sedan – 32 mpg
The Mitsubishi Mirage has a three-cylinder engine that makes just 78 horsepower, but at least it's efficient. The Nissan Versa has an additional cylinder and a whopping 122 horses, and is a nicer car overall.
Compact Cars
- Toyota Prius XLE (AWD) – 51 mpg
- Hyundai Elantra Hybrid Blue – 48 mpg
- Toyota Corolla LE Hybrid – 48 mpg
- Kia Niro PHEV – 47 mpg
- Kia Niro EX – 45 mpg
As with the Niro that's also in this section, the Prius went through a huge glow-up as well. Not only is it one of the most efficient cars on sale, it finally looks amazing and drives great too. The Elantra and Corolla are nice too, but not nearly as interesting to look at.
Sporty Cars
- Mazda MX-5 Miata Club – 34 mpg
- Honda Civic Si – 32 mpg
- BMW 230i – 31 mpg
- Mini Cooper S – 30 mpg
- BMW Z4 sDrive30 – 29 mpg
The Civic is the only car in this section with four doors, but it does have a manual transmission as standard. You can't get a 2 Series convertible anymore, so at least the Z4 makes it on this list as well. And, of course, there's a convertible Mini too if that's what you're after. But let's be real — if you want a sporty droptop, you're just getting the Miata.
Midsize Cars
- Hyundai Ioniq 6 – 103 MPGe
- Toyota Camry Hybrid LE – 47 mpg
- Hyundai Sonata Hybrid SEL – 44 mpg
- Honda Accord Hybrid Sport – 40 mpg
- Honda Accord EX (1.5T) – 32 mpg
It's hard to go wrong with any of these sedans, it just depends on how weird you want the styling to be. The Ioniq 6 is the only electric model here, and one of the only electric sedans in general.
Large Cars
- Toyota Crown – 42 mpg
The Crown is a strange one, a fastback sedan that's lifted with SUV-like body cladding. That's before you add the optional two-tone hood and trunklid. But every Crown is a hybrid and they're actually pretty good to drive, so if you can stomach the styling it's worth looking at.
Upscale/Luxury Cars
- Lexus ES300h – 42 mpg
- Acura Integra A-Spec – 31 mpg
- Buick Envista – 29 mpg
- BMW 330i xDrive – 29 mpg
- BMW 330e xDrive – 28 mpg
The ES is fantastic, and much larger than the Integra hatchback and 3 Series sedan. Then you've got the Envista here, which is a coupe-like compact SUV that's a lot better than you'd think.
Electric Upscale/Luxury Cars
- Tesla Model 3 Long Range – 130 MPGe
- Lucid Air Touring (AWD) – 121 MPGe
- Polestar 2 Long Range Dual-Motor – 106 MPGe
- Tesla Model S Long Range – 102 MPGe
- BMW i4 M50 – 96 MPGe
These electric sedans run the gamut of affordable and small in the Polestar's case to large and luxurious in the Lucid's case. The liftback i4 is a nice middle-ground.
Wagons and Hatchbacks
- Nissan Kicks SV – 32 mpg
- Hyundai Venue SEL – 32 mpg
- Chevrolet Trax – 31 mpg
- Subaru Impreza Sport – 29 mpg
- Kia Soul EX – 28 mpg
These may not be the most exciting new cars, but they're all fairly practical and definitely affordable. We're not gonna complain about more small cars being available even if they're mostly all crossovers.
Small SUVs
- Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid – 41 mpg
- Lexus NX350h – 38 mpg
- Lexus UX250h – 37 mpg
- Toyota RAV4 Hybrid XLE – 37 mpg
- Ford Escape PHEV (FWD) – 37 mpg
At 41 mpg the Corolla Cross Hybrid is the most-efficient SUV you'll find in this story, but anything in the high-30s is pretty nice. If you want more luxury the Lexus NX is a great crossover now that it's been redesigned.
Electric Small SUVs
- Tesla Model Y Long Range – 121 MPGe
- Kia EV6 Wind – 105 MPGe
- Subaru Solterra Limited – 102 MPGe
- Toyota bZ4X Limited – 102 MPGe
- Hyundai Ioniq 5 SEL – 98 MPGe
The Toyota and Subaru twins might be efficient, but their ranges are low. Go for the Hyundai and Kia siblings instead.
Midsize/Large SUVs
- Toyota Venza XLE – 37 mpg
- Toyota Highlander Hybrid XLE – 35 mpg
- Lexus RX350h – 34 mpg
- Kia Sorento Hybrid EX – 28 mpg
- Kia Sorento EX (2.5 Turbo) – 25 mpg
While the RX is the most outright luxurious model here, both the Venza and the Sorento will give it a run for its money in some trims. Both the Sorento and the Highlander are available with three rows of seats.
Electric Midsize/Large SUVs
- Lexus RZ – 107 MPGe
- Tesla Model X Long Range – 87 MPGe
- BMW iX xDrive50 – 86 MPGe
- Kia EV9 Wind – 83 MPGe
- Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV 350 (AWD) – 82 MPGe
The RZ is the smallest and lowest-range of these, while the Tesla and EV9 are the only ones with three rows of seats. The iX is by far the nicest and the coolest, though.
Minivans
- Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid – 84 MPGe
- Toyota Sienna XLE – 36 mpg
- Honda Odyssey EX-L – 22 mpg
- Chrysler Pacifica Touring-L – 21 mpg
- Kia Carnival EX – 21 mpg
The Pacifica is a plug-in hybrid and one of Jalopnik's favorite vehicles — as is the V6-powered Carnival. Honestly we love all (or at least most) minivans.
Pickup Trucks
- Ford Maverick Hybrid Lariat – 37 mpg
- Hyundai Santa Cruz SEL Premium – 24 mpg
- Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT Diesel – 23 mpg
- Ford Maverick XLT (2.0T) – 23 mpg
- Ram 1500 Big Horn Diesel – 23 mpg
The Maverick Hybrid is excellent, but it's only available with front-wheel drive. The Santa Cruz is similarly small and car-like, while the Chevy and Ram are about as trucky as it gets.
