Sweet Sassy Molassey, The Parade Of BMW Four-Door Coupes Continues!

Just two weeks ago, I was rejoicing over the fact that Bimmer Jesus heard my prayers for a slightly larger version of the BMW 3 Series that is inexplicably called a coupe despite having four doors. The result is the forthcoming 4 Series Gran Coupe.

Well, it turns out that Bimmer Jesus is an extremely proactive dude. Earlier this week our friends at Road and Track came out with renderings of a smaller, more entry level four-door coupe: the 2 Series Gran Coupe.

It's fabulous news, because this is exactly the car that has been demanded by... um... well, someone out there, apparently.

As with its big brother, the upcoming 4 Series — which is normally a two-door coupe version of the 3 Series unless it's a Gran Coupe in which case it has four doors, obviously — this 2 Series is a 1 Series with two doors. Except this one is a Gran Coupe. So it has four doors. Get it? No? Try reading this paragraph again and see if that helps.

Goofy nomenclature aside, this may not be such a bad idea. It's a small, attractive RWD sedan (unlike the purportedly FWD 1 Series GT) with available straight six- and turbo four-cylinder engines.

We all know how big the 3 has gotten, so maybe this will fill the niche for those wanting something a bit trimmer. BMW seems hell bent on filling every niche possible with their cars, after all.

I do foresee one minor problem. There's only one possible response you can get when you tell someone you drive a "BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe," and that is: "What the hell are you talking about?"

Click on over to Road and Track to check out even more renderings and details on the forthcoming coupe/sedan/coupedan.

What a friend we have in Bimmer Jesus!
