McGoo Blogs At The Jockey Journal
One of the things we love about Jalopnik is hearing from or somehow reconnecting with our heroes. When we were a BMX-obsessed squirt on a Redline RL20 II and later an Auburn CR-20R, our favorite magazines were BMX Action, Freestylin' and later, Go. Bear in mind that the guys who put these mags together were a formidible crew that included artist Andy Jenkins (who proudly represents Pedro), filmmaker Spike Jonze, Jackass director Jeff Tremaine and former Grand Royal editor Mark Lewman.
Their short interview with Ian MacKaye in an issue of Go that we excitedly shared with our friends in 7th grade science class was directly responsible for us getting into punk rock. This incident also led to us getting grounded for an unsatisfactory citizenship grade, if we remember correctly.
They turned their friends into folk heroes, and one of those guys was Harold McGruther, better known as McGoo. At the time, he worked for GT and was known for attempting to scrape the mirrors of vans on freeway walls at high speed. And now the Atomic Industries kids have him blogging on badass cycles over at the Jockey Journal. If your tastes run toward the two-wheeled, it's definitely worth checking out.
