Holden Laughs Last As Aussie-Built Pontiacs Dodge GM's Recalls
Whenever we write about a new General Motors recall — which is often, these days — one of you jokers inevitably says "Wouldn't it be faster to make a list of GM cars that HAVEN'T been recalled?" Well, after going through today's infographic, it seems the Aussie Pontiacs are safe so far.
Though GM has recalled close to 29 million cars in 2014, the 2004-2006 Pontiac GTO and 2008-2009 Pontiac G8 haven't been recalled. For anything. At all. Nothing. No recalls on those rear-drive bad boys. (At least, not in GM's recall maelstrom this year, they've had other ones.)
That's nuts to think about, since GM has been thoroughly combing through their safety records and recalling everything in sight for seemingly any reason at all. Maybe they were just better made than all the other cars? Then again, they definitely had common parts, and both the GTO and G8 shared V8 and V6 (in the latter) engines with other GM cars.
At the same time, the other two recent Holden-built Chevrolet cars — the Caprice cop car and SS — were recalled for windshield wiper issues. But those problems are far more minor than some of the defects the other cars were recalled over.
Perhaps this will serve as some kind of vindication for Holden, GM's Australian division, which will see an end to homegrown car manufacturing in the next few years. Good job, Holden! Your commitment to quality, and burnouts, will be missed by all of us.
Of course, this lack of recalls for the GTO and G8 could very well change tomorrow. In the meantime, I'll be enjoying the safety and reliability of my beloved Pontiac G8 Sport Truck. OH WAIT THEY NEVER MADE THAT. (Goes off to be bitter alone somewhere)
