Commenter Of The Day: I'm From Detroit Edition
Both Jalopnik's Ray Wert and Ben Wojdyla hail from the long lost land of Detroit, which is why they're simultaneously so defensive and sarcastic about their birth place. Few other cities are so recognized as utter failures yet so appreciated for authentic character than Detroit by the same group of people. The rest of us have had fun times in Detroit... though we've also seen dead bodies on the street. You wouldn't think it's ever some sort of great advantage to be from Detroit, but GasGuzzler is suddenly King of Houston during our snow storm.
It's a riot around here, everyone is leaving the office due to "Houston Blizzard 09" haha.
They all seem surprised as I'm unphased by our slightly frozen precipitation, until I remind them I'm from Detroit.
Best winter vehicle? I quite enjoy my AWD TT Stealth. Viscous all wheel drive systems are more fun in the snow than an Obama pinata at a Rush Limbaugh fundraiser. Having the viscous hooked up to six cogs I get to row myself, plus a pair of quickly spooling snails, makes for some seriously fun snow donuts.
Hanging the tail out around bends and corners as the front stays aimed exactly where you wanted it is comforting and rewarding. Dial back the opposite lock and the car pulls itself right back in line. It's quite comical to see the look on pickup/SUV driver's faces as a car with a fraction of their ground clearance handles the snow better – and on Michelin Pilots at that!
Yeah, we're going to do the same thing in our Volvo.
