Commenter Of The Day: Fool For Love Edition

Everyone loves A Lie Of The Mind because it's so screwed up it's sexy and any actor would kill to play the parts Sam Shepherd wrote. But if we're being honest, we think we're more interested in the play version of Fool For Love, which premiered with no less than Ed Harris as one of the battling, doomed lovers. The script is mostly plotless, with the arc being defined by the rise and fall of emotions and not actions, which is fairly stock for him. It's a feeling TR3-A can relate to in today's QOTD.

had my TR3-A (actually, it turns out it was a "B" but that is another story) which was worn and old (12 years old at the time). I got "lucky" and was able to purchase a totaled TR4 race car really cheap. The engine, trans and lots of other parts were in good shape. I decided to swap engines and transmissions. The racing engine had a 2.2 liter kit plus other goodies. The trans had an aluminum case and electric overdrive.

I was living on a farm outside of Nevada, Iowa at the time and there was a barn I could use. I got everything set up, including pulling the engine from the TR4 and preparing the barn. I worked in Ames and I needed the car to get to work so the job had to be done over the weekend. Friday night, I got started and by Sunday night, the engine and trans (and radiator and a few other things) were installed and running. I drove it to work Monday morning. I made a few adjustments but that was about it. The swap turned out to be more than I had hoped (and a lot more work than expected!). Never had a bit of trouble with it. I drove it from Iowa to Eugene, Oregon when I moved. It broke my heart to have to sell the car a couple of years later.

I remember this well because it was one of the few things in my life I did right.

That last line is pure Shepherd.
