BMW 2002, Toyota Crown Majesta V8, International Scout II: The Dopest Vehicles I Found For Sale Online
A revered BMW, a Japanese import, an old truck and more.
Another week means another entry into our series featuring the sweet cars I found for sale online.
To compile this list, I search as much of Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist as I can for interesting vehicles that don't cost a fortune. They may be hilariously unreliable, remarkably unusual, questionably tuned, or just something else that stops me in my tracks. Prices for some cars are trending higher due to currently out-of-control used car prices, but I think some good deals are still out there.
1961 Cadillac de Ville - $14,000
This lump of old-school American iron would be a perfect vehicle to cruise down Woodward Avenue in Detroit. It comes from a time when cars were adorned with loads of chrome and all sorts of fins. Under the long hood is a 6.4-liter V8 making 325 HP.
This one is appears to be a little rough around the edges but can be driven as-is. It's $14,000 on Facebook Marketplace in Madison, Wisconsin, with 108,000 miles.
2003 Volkswagen Jetta Smyth Ute - $8,000
This one could be the cutest pickup truck on your block. Smyth Performance makes ute kits to turn a variety of normally mundane vehicles into pickups. This Jetta was given the ute treatment, a fresh coat of paint, then converted to GTI-spec. So this silly ute should also be some solid fun to drive. There's a long list of mods and the work looks pretty well done.
It's $8,000 on Facebook Marketplace in Austin, Texas.
1996 Suzuki X-90 - $2,200
The Suzuki X-90 is an adorable 4x4 with a t-top roof configuration. This little car replaced the Samurai and I find them to be surprisingly capable. You'll find them wheeling alongside Jeeps and Rangers on the Gambler 500 or sometimes chasing side-by-sides down trails.
This one is said to have no rust, but a few issues like a flashing overdrive light and sometimes being hard to start. It's $2,200 on Facebook Marketplace in Valparaiso, Indiana, with 170,000 miles.
1982 Honda CX500 Turbo - $3,000
Back in the 1980s, Honda experimented with some innovative technology for motorcycling. The CX500 Turbo is an engineering triumph with Honda producing some 230 patents just to make the thing a reality. With the help of fuel injection and a turbo that really kicked in at 4,000 RPM the CX500 made 82 HP.
The seller of this one says that it needs some cosmetic work, but honestly it looks like it could be ridden as-is. It's $3,000 on Facebook Marketplace in Dover, Ohio, with 34,000 miles.
1995 Toyota Crown Majesta V8 - $10,900
The Toyota Crown Majesta was Toyota's flagship full-size luxury car. This car has an interior wrapped in wool and wood. There are also doilies for the seats.
Adding to the luxury is a heads up display, digital dashboard and a touchscreen GPS/TV unit.
This particular model has the 1UZ-FE V8, the engine used in the Lexus LS400. It's $10,900 on Craigslist in Roswell, Georgia, with a verified 27,000 miles.
1986 Polski Fiat 126p - $4,500
This Polski Fiat is powered by a straight twin offering 23 to 26 HP depending on displacement. The seller doesn't say what displacement this one has, nor do they offer any real details.
It's $4,500 on Facebook Marketplace in Miami, Florida.
1975 BMW 2002 - $6,800
This week's enthusiast car is for the classic BMW lover. The 2002 is revered by enthusiasts as an example of everything a vintage sports sedan should be. It's a car that looks beautiful from every angle and doesn't need a million horsepower to put a smile on your face.
Nicer ones are getting expensive while cheaper ones seem to be really rotted out. This one appears to be sort of rough, but is said to be solid with a five-speed manual transmission. A fresh coat of paint and some new trim would really help bring it back. It's $6,800 on Craigslist in Seattle, Washington, with 130,000 miles.
2006 Cadillac XLR - $14,500
The XLR is Cadillac's take on the Chevrolet Corvette's formula. The two were even built in the same Bowling Green, Kentucky, facility sharing the same underpinnings. The XLR went in the luxury roadster direction, getting Cadillac's "Art & Science" styling, leather heated and cooled seats, adaptive cruise control and a complicated folding roof.
In fact, the XLR is so complicated that a single taillight assembly costs as much as a used Toyota. Another way it differs from the Corvette is by having GM's Northstar V8 under the hood, making 320 HP.
This one is cheaper than many of the XLRs at $14,500 on Facebook Marketplace in San Tan Valley, Arizona. It has 102,000 miles on the odometer.
1980 International Scout II Terra
The International Scout was a utilitarian 4x4 known for its off-road capability and unique looks.
The Scout II is the second-generation of the truck and it's a bit bigger and a bit beefier than the one that came before it. The Terra was about 18 inches longer than the standard Scout II for extra utility. Plus, you can remove the bed cap and the roof for that perfect summertime open air experience.
The seller says that the truck was repainted in 1990 and it's flaking off. But it's a Colorado truck with limited corrosion and a 345-cubic inch V8. Check out the interior picture and sure enough, that rocker looks solid! It's $10,000 on Facebook Marketplace in Aurora, Minnesota.
That's it for this week! Have you purchased a car from one of these posts? If so, I want to know.
If you know of a weird car for sale on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist, drop it down in the comments or send it along in an email! If the car's still for sale, we may feature it in a future post.
