and the teddy bears, in general, are pretty good. cobrastyle, featuring a bit of the kid rock "diggy diggy" vocal riff is fun too.

The whole argument about Madison Avenue co-opting "pure" artists is,in my opinion, just not relevant anymore. what is wrong with artists making money and actually getting their songs heard? Has anyone out there even heard this song on the radio? Of course not. Artists do not create art for themselves, they do it so that folks can hear it. It is not the fault of the ad-makers that commercial radio is irrelvant. I have heard more interesting music on TV commercials than almost anywhere else, And I support it. As a muscian myself, the whole starving artist thing is over rated. As long as the words of the spot do not serve as "copy", as in
the Nissan spot that used Lenny K's "I want to get away..." and then showed people getting away...if they use the music to create a feeling or mood, than that is a good thing. And Fuzzyman is right. Say what you want about Caddy, but they invented the game, and by the looks of the new CTS, they are poised to win.
Again. Americans love a comeback.

condemek

The ad does a great job of re-establishing Cadillac's heritage. Revisionist history, yes --nothing from the 80's or 90's there except an Allante. But it does a nice job of putting you in the mindset that they aren't just the hot new challenger to BMW/Audi/Mercedes, but that there is a history of greatness that buyers can be connected to. It's all about connecting their current success to the proudest parts of their history.

Lexus could not make this ad. And that's the point.

Fuzzyman

The ad kinda works for me...although as things progress, it really highlights how crappy things got. And WTF is up with the rental car maroon on the XLR? If Caddy wants to court younger buyers (YOB: 1982), they're going to have to ditch a car color I associate most with plastic couch covers and floor runners. Black is the new black.

My wife thinks the XLR is too much the sexy...not like we'd ever buy one.

Mad_Science

Catching up on a Monday and happy to see this thread running strong. Thom L, are you on the production side, client side, or agency side? Regardless, I have a very non-sucky idea (IMHO, of course!) for a truck campaign. One that has at least one nut.

Regarding Cads and demos...my biz partner is 38 and has an Infiniti G35 and (despite my best efforts to prevent him from buying it) a LR Discovery. His previous car was a Jeep Cherokee. I know we're not midwestern in our location but there is no way in hizzell that he would ever consider a Cadillac (or Buick or Lincoln) all that seriously.

While I like the CTS-V's chops, if I were going to pony up the coin ($51k), I'd seriously consider an S4 or used M5 first. Heck, for that kind of cash you could even go Subaru discreet spec, plow $10k into tuning mods and still come out with money to spare.

Al Navarro

Iggy's pretty cool... and he's from Detoit isn't he? Even better. Led Zep's "Rock n' Roll" was cool too. And had the advantage of actually fitting the theme of the ads "Been a long time since I rock and rolled...." Practically an apology from Cadillac for not making driver's cars for the last 40 years.

Caddie's ads are just trying to skew younger, and the cars show it too. I'm not buying it, but there's no reason why some midwestern, midtexas or middlemanager thirtysomething guy won't buy it. All power to 'em.

I worked on that commercial 2 months ago. It was made using a DSLR camera on a motion control rig. Snap a picture, approve, move the rig's tracks, move the rig, move the car. It took almost two weeks for the two spots in 110+ degree weather. So no, it's not morphed it's animated via the old stlye single frame animation. The only CG is they had to remove the motion control rig shadows and tracks out of alot of the frames (though if you look close you can see some crane shadows).

thomleidner

The Teddy Bears are a lukewarm indie-pop act from Sweden who've cut Iggy Pop a check in a bid for punk-rock credibility. But all Cadillac needs from them is is to bait a few 38-year-old middle managers into considering Cadillac -- by way of a vague association with a voice familiar to their demographic and a driving four beat. Blamo -- the average age of their buyers drops from 62 to 54. Job done. Still -- someone should recut this ad with The Dicks and see how it works.

Mike Spinelli

it is a crappy song. I was never an Iggy Pop fan either and yes I used to rock out back in the day. Good car commercials these days? not many. Mazda continues to lame up ads for cars they can barely manage to meet production on.
The GM trucks ad is amerigasmic for sure but lame too.
the flying gms lame.
Audi Q7 with eurobeats really makes my head hurt.
I liked those Toyota Yaris sucking up gas spots.
and of course the best ones are the bmw in the office and the bmw driver and jogger in next door driveways.
Speaking of Iggy Pop, isn't it time the Detroit automakers made him their spokesman? Hmmm... get John Waters to direct the ads and they might have something there.

MurileeMartin

"Even without the punk rock, I'm enthused about Cadillac these days. Clever tagline. Wish I'd thought of that."

Modernista / Cadillac wishes they thought of it as well. Honda used the exact same line for the new civic a few months ago...

Modernista's whole new campaign for Cadillac makes my brain hurt. Horrible, horrible advertising.

Mastodon

Fuck that. The only way a Cadillac is in any way, shape or form punk, is when a punker adopts a busted-ass one. As I get older, I get less precious about my subculture being co-opted. I even loved the Nissan "Tripod" Xterra spot featuring the Stooges. But this is more clueless GM bullshit. It's a shame, too, because Cadillac's actually building some stuff I like these days. But go do that, nimrods; keep building good cars - don't go trying to step in on my shit. We clear? Thanks. Oh, and that song sucks, too.

Davey G.

See, I really dig angular lines on a car -- especially one built for speed. The lines make it look like a knife...a beautiful V-8 powered knife.

Ray Wert

They did this cutting through the years for the new truck ads, too, no?

I don't hate. But I think I'm just about the only person under 40 who doesn't come from a long line of Cadillac drivers (if you know what I'm saying, and I think you do) who feels that this car (make that any Caddy that isn't some form of Escalade) is even moderately appealing. There's no way any of my friends who actually have the means to buy (or even lease) one would be caught at the wheel of one.

I love the XLR's feeling of width. I dig that Caddy went with the whole creased angle styling motif. And of course, I've watched the CTS racecars not suck entirely. But I'm not a very big audience segment.

Al Navarro

The ad's double-edged, though: It's obvious which Caddys would get action (why else own a car with so much room inside?) and which you mistook for Lincolns.

That camera-moving-around-object-to-be-market... technique is gonna be so laughably dated in the not-very-distant future. And where's the Cimarron? Or the V8-6-4?

If they really wanted to, like, market to the hipster crowd (well, the under-90 crowd, anyway) they'd do an ad showing Hank Williams OD-ing in his '53. Imagine it! Moody black-and-white film stock, "I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive" twanging on the AM as the camera pans from the car's radio, across the Cadillac emblem on the steering wheel, and then to Hank's stiffening corpse. A loving closeup of loose pills and a whiskey flask on the seat, then the new Cadillac slogan appears on the screen: "Live Hard. Die High. Cadillac."

MurileeMartin
