Toyota: Credit Not Responsible For Current Sales Slump, But Please Hurry Up And Fix!

Jim Lentz, Toyota's US sales chief, told the Detroit News yesterday that consumer financing isn't their challenge right now; rather, low consumer confidence is keeping buyers out of showrooms. "The vast majority of our customers are able to get approved for loans," said Lentz, claiming that a record number of consumers are postponing car purchases. Dealers across the country are singing a similar tune, saying that well-qualified buyers can still get financing, but continuing bad economic news is keeping buyers out of showrooms. As the report notes, though, consumer confidence isn't an easy ship to right once it begins to list. More »

Jalopnik Paris Pissing Match: Honda Insight vs. Toyota Prius

OK folks, now that the new Prius-fighter from Honda has officially seen the sheet dropped at the Paris Motor Show early this morning, it's time to ask the important question — which one will win? In one corner, you've got the long-time champion of the hybrid arena. In the other, the pugnacious new Honda Insight, determined to beat the Prius in at least one chart — price. With that, here's the question: More »

Lexus LF-Xh Concept Hits Paris Show Floor In Matte Black

The last time we saw the Lexus LF-Xh concept was back at the 2007 Tokyo Auto Show. That was a year ago. Now it's the Paris Auto Show and, it's... um... been painted matte black. Staggering progress. Though it's a bit hard to analyze it with that matte black paint, this looks to be virtually unchanged from the old version. Allegedly it's been designed as a preview of the eventual Lexus RX replacement, and as you may have guessed from the 'h' in the name, it's a hybrid. We're not huge fans of crossovers, but we've got to admit that this looks pretty slick. Chances are we'll be let down by whatever the design has been watered down to by the time it's reached production. Maybe manufacturers should start making matte black a factory paint option.

Toyota September Sales Down 32%; Honda Drops 24%

As clear proof that today's recession is an equal-opportunity unemployer, Toyota has posted a September sales decline of 32% from a year earlier — one of the worst results in the company's 50 years of US sales — while Honda sank 24% in the face of the consumer credit crisis. The declines at Toyota and Honda reinforce analysts' perceptions that auto sales are now being affected more by the US economic crisis than they are by high fuel prices. More sales numbers as we get them.

Toyota Develops First Rear-Window Curtain-Shield Airbag, Opening New Front In Safety Wars

Apparently we're not the only ones who look at a car like the Toyota iQ and wonder what could happen to back-seat passengers in a rear-end collision: Toyota today announced the development of a rear-window curtain shield airbag. Not surprisingly, Toyota also announced that the first application for its new 'bag will be in the iQ sub-sub-compact, which places its rear passengers' heads basically against the hatch glass. Much like a side curtain airbag, the rear curtain airbag will drop from the vehicle headliner and work with the headrests to help prevent injuries. Next up: The fully inflatable headliner for rollovers and seat back frontal airbags for rear-seat passengers. You just watch. Full release after the jump More »

Toyota Reveals Venza Project Car For SEMA

We're not going to pretend to be excited about the new Toyota Venza crossover, but Toyota's trying to get someone under 40 interested by bringing a pair of restyled Venzas to the SEMA show in Vegas later this month. Tuners Five Axis and Street Design have been tapped to make the mods, and it's interesting to see the different approaches the two companies are taking in their design renders.

1980 Toyota Cresta: The Exclusive Car!

In 1980 Japan, it was possible to get synthesizer keyboards with far more futuristic "whistling echo laser" effects than those used anywhere else in the Free World. Naturally, the Cresta was the machine most deserving of those keyboards. Somewhat similar in appearance to its American cousin, the Cressida, the Cresta was basically a luxury-enhanced Corona Mark II. Nice car, but we'd rather have a Crown Super Saloon.

Simulator Hot-Lap Of F1 Singapore Grand Prix Street Circuit Night Race

This video of Williams F1 driver Nico Rosberg practicing for the Singapore Grand Prix's street circuit on the simulator is about as close as anybody will get to driving the track until the cars actually get on track this weekend. Since it is the first ever night race for Formula One, that means the action will start at 8 AM EST this Sunday. Just don't count on the conditions to be as perfect as the computer sim might lead you to believe. Rain is forecasted, which, combined with the glare from artificial lighting, should produce some very entertaining competition. We might actually watch this one. [via Gridcrasher]
