The answer, as you can see in the video below the jump, is yes. It's simply astonishing to watch a 436 HP, 424 lb-ft of torque metal monster rip up some meat. We all know Clarkson's got a thing for power, but who knew it extended from the track into the kitchen?

<![CDATA[ James May: Honda Cub Is The Greatest Machine Of All Time ]]> We already know that James May thinks the Triumph Mayflower is the ugliest car ever made, and now he's declared the Honda Super Cub motorcycle to be the Greatest Vehicle Ever Made. In fact, he believes Soichiro's 50cc bike- now in its sixth decade of production- to be "the single most influential product of humankind’s creativity." We won't go quite that far, but the Super Cub may well be the all-time king of motor vehicles in terms of man-miles driven… or would that honor go to the Volkswagen Beetle or Model A T Ford?

And here's the Discovery Channel piece that got Mr. May going on the topic:

<![CDATA[ British Mopar Enthusiast Earns Fame Three Seconds At A Time With Vintage Challenger ]]> If you watched yesterday's episode of Top Gear — specifically, the American muscle challenge you may have noticed a rather cherry vintage R/T Challenger in the background. The car belongs to Mark, an Englishman with a penchant for vintage Mopar muscle and a willingness to share the car with others. In addition to the most recent episode of Top Gear, Mark's Challenger was also featured in Motor Trend alongside the new 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8. How, exactly, did a vintage Challenger end up in England?

Mark has always been a fan of Dodge muscle and, until recently, owned a 1973 Plymouth 340 Cuda. After selling that car to an enthusiast in Germany, Mark did what any reasonable person would do and sped off to Vegas with the hopes of buying a four-speed big block. Unable to find the right one, the Londoner with a love of loud pipes headed home. Alas, not a week later this very special Dodge Challenger 440 RT four-speed showed up on eBay UK and Mark quickly took possession of it.

The car itself has a much longer history, having been purchased and restored as a family project by the Stahlhebers of St. Peters Missouri. You can read the full story of the Challenger build here. The Stahlhebers sold the car at auction to a different UK collector who then turned around and listed the car on eBay. And the car itself?

Although it is not a true numbers matching car- It does decode to be an original 440 RT four-speed car. A full rotisserie restoration had been completed a couple of years before and virtually everything had been replaced- with NOS or repro parts etc. The engine is a 1970 440 with a few extra performance parts and dress up pieces- and runs just great!- bodywork is rust free and looks stunning in F4 Rallye Red- This is actually a 1969 Chrsyler colour and is offset with the period RT side stripes. The four speed gearbox is shifted with the Hurst pistol grip shifter - another cool option in my opinion. Since owning her I have driven it as much as the crappy English weather will allow!

When not driving her or racking up trophies, Mark hasn't been shy about parading the car out for the press. Perhaps we should make an effort to go to the London Motor Show this year for the chance to drive Mark's beautiful example of Mopar muscle.

(Thanks to Mark for the info and photos)

<![CDATA[ Top Gear Does The 2904 Cross-Country Rally, Brings Jalopnik On Board For Heavy-Lifting ]]> Attempting to prove once and for all driving cross-country quickly doesn’t require a trust fund, an ego or a BMW M5, Top Gear magazine set out this weekend to drive from New York to San Francisco — 2904 miles — on just $2904. And yes, that does include the car. More used to spending the spoils of British TV License fee payers on Dodge Challenger SRT8s, the Beeb had to enlist a little expertise in making big things happen on a small budget; Jalopnik’s own Ben Wojdyla. He’s live-blogging the drive for them from the back seat of the ’94 Caprice over on TopGear.com as we speak. <![CDATA[ Top Gear Reviews Dodge Challenger, Corvette ZR1, Cadillac CTS-V...And They Like Them! ]]> When pictures of the Top Gear team coming stateside hit the internet this summer, we were pretty sure we were in for something epic. Well, the episode just aired today, and yes, it was. From Hammond having to buy a Challenger (silly Chrysler PR team!), the boys not being allowed to be "entertaining," some kid wearing a Western Michigan t-shirt and Clarkson mistaking the ZR1 for a "muscle car" — it's a hoot. In the process, they came to the same conclusions we did in our reviews of the three newest 'merican muscular offerings on the market. Want to see the segment yourself? Hit the jump, friends.

Clarkson on all three: "We came wondering if America had finally made a car that might actually work in the civilized world. The answer is no, they haven't. As you can see from our smiles, they've made three."

Car: 2009 Corvette ZR1
Driver: Jeremy Clarkson
Review:"This is made by two fat blokes in Kentucky." "I'm starting to like this Corvette...it isn't the power, it's the surprise of the power. When you're driving a Ferrari Enzo, you're expecting it. This though, it's quiet, it's comfortable, it's beautifullyair-conditioned...so you're simply not ready for the savagery when you put your foot down. I've got a heads-up display with your lateral G...and the best stereo in the world...!" "Man, this is great. " "How can a car as docile as this one be as exciting when the road gets this twisty." "A proper manual gearbox." "Are you listening Ferrari? Well done fat man from Kentucky...this...is...a.masterpiece!"

Car: 2009 Cadillac CTS-V

<![CDATA[ Richard Hammond's Ferrari 550 Up For Sale ]]> Looks like Top Gear co-host Richard Hammond has decided to part with one of his cars, in this case a 1997 Ferrari 550 with just 49,000 miles on the clock. Despite the fact this supercar was owned first by EVO magazine before falling into the hands of Hammond, the advertisement states the 550 has "had every care possible by Maranello to keep it pristine." Hammond's Ferrari is the requisite red with black interior and has a proper manual gearbox, but with right-hand drive, US buyers need not apply, even at the asking price of about $66,200. Aside from the much-anticipated American power tour, we see shots from all kinds of shenanigans set to start in two weeks, including what looks like double-decker bus racing — or at least tipping, the Stig in a Bugatti Veyron and Captain Slow getting punished at the helm of a very slick speed boat. We've snapped a couple of screen grabs and listed out what to expect from the new season, all available after the jump.

<![CDATA[ Top Gear Season 10 Available In iTunes ]]> For all the grief we give Clarkson and his two interns, we’re actually huge fans of Top Gear. It’s the show that made our carmosexuality OK with our moms. Amongst TopGearphiles, Season 10 is held up as the all-time greatest, featuring the Motorhome Grand Prix, the Channel crossing and, yes, the Kalihari special — probably the greatest episode ever. Each episode costs $1.99 or you can buy the whole season for $14.99. If you have the means, we highly recommend heading to iTunes for the downloads.

Just launching today, it’s still a little light on original content, but what there is — particularly the school bus demolition story — is refreshingly high quality and weaves together text, photography and video in a way the online presences of print publications often fail to do. We’re relieved by the absence of Eric Stromer from any of the editorial, but we are hoping the website will be able to find its own unique voice within the Top Gear empire and stop relying on grudging cameo appearances from Jeremy, Richard and James. <![CDATA[ Jeremy Clarkson's Thriller DVD Blows Stuff Up ]]> Not to be confused for a Michael Jackson video, Jeremy Clarkson's Thriller is the latest in his line of tire-smoking, explosion-filled DVDs. This time he's been behind the wheel of an Aston Martin DBS, Pagani Zonda F Roadster, McLaren SLR 722 GTR, and Porsche 911 Turbo to name a few. We know it might feel a bit like the Jeremy Clarkson Gawker Stalker around here as of late, with Jezza ranting on the CTS-V and ZR1, being spotted in Vietnam and on a scooter, and crashing head-on into things. <![CDATA[ Would Top Gear Netherlands Be A Bridge Too Far? ]]> With word today that the ever-expanding Top Gear family is once again reaching beyond the UK shores for Top Gear Russia it may be time to to decide if we actually want and/or need more Top Gear franchises. How many Top Gears is too many Top Gears? What country should be next? Top Gear: The Netherlands? Viva Top Gear Mexico? At what point, if ever, does Top Gear jump the shark?

With Top Gear Australia in a bit of a ratings slump we must question whether the original works because of the three-hot format or the chemistry between the three hosts. While the formula could work anywhere, including here, we don't think that's a guarantee. The original didn't become wildly popular until the the fearsome threesome of May, Hammond and Clarkson hit their stride. The American version of the office doesn't work because it's a good story or a good style (look at Coupling, Teachers or Kath & Kim), it works because of Steve Carrell, Rainn Wilson and the supporting staff. Can magic strike again with other hosts? Sure. But the original is still working and each new show is merely a roll of the dice to see if they can duplicate the same success and, even if it does, we'll still just be illegally downloading the UK version with the rest of the world.

<![CDATA[ Top Gear Russia Officially Confirmed! ]]> Apparently Top Gear's aggressive television expansion is now no longer limited to people who speak some form of English. The world's greatest, and now most franchised, automotive TV show in the world has just confirmed they'll be expanding to Russia. Yes, folks, that's right, a Top Gear made for Russians, by Russians will air 15 episodes starting around the end of this year. Sorry, but we're so excited we're even too stunned to make a "In Soviet Russia, something-something-something you!" joke. So take your bearskin caps and the rest of the report after the jump, you Capitalist pigs!

By the end of the year there will be a Clarksonov, Hammondchenko and Mayovski roaming the frozen steppes of Russia. Probably in Ladas.

Yes, there’s going to be a Top Gear Russia. Made in Russia for the Russians. A bit like the Aussie TG, but with more back-to-front letters and fewer boomerangs.

Everything’s a bit hush-hush at the moment, but we know that it’s going to run for 15 episodes initially, around the end of this year. The Russian Top Gear magazine has been doing well over there since its launch in 2004, so hopefully the locals will be familiar with TG’s ‘ambitious but rubbish’ philosophy.

First up, though, we’ve got to find the local presenters. Rumours that Clarkson, May and Hammond will be making a guest appearance clad in bearskin hats remain unconfirmed.

We can’t imagine there’ll be any shortage of candidates for the arduous job of thrashing supercars around the beautiful Russian outback. Or whatever the Russians call the outback.

There’s no word on what studio or test track they’ll be using yet, but we have glorious visions of a giant Russian Clarkson firing up a Murcielago in a decommissioned nuclear silo, surrounded by hoards of TG faithful wrapped up in layers of wintery clothes.

And bearskin hats. It’s all about the bearskin hats.

<![CDATA[ Clarkson Decides Not All American Cars Are Rubbish, Would Take Cadillac CTS-V Over BMW M5 ]]> We had some outrage from the readers when that Jeremy Clarkson fella (who recently crashed and is not at all dead) from across the water done made the Chrysler Sebring convertible one of them- whaddya call it- metaphors for the entire United States and dissed 'em both. Well, you disgruntled types can go ahead and regruntle yourselves, because now The Stig is shopping for a 4-door saloon and Clarkson thinks the Cadillac CTS-V looks like a helluva lot better deal than the BMW M5. His logic goes something like this: 1) The Cad is £19,000 cheaper than the M5, 2) The CTS-V is faster around the Nürburgring, and 3) The Stig won't worry about the insatiable thirst of the CTS-V, because he saved so much money buying it in the first place.

<![CDATA[ Jeremy Clarkson In Head-On Accident Filming Top Gear, Doing Just Fine ]]> Proving he's as bull-headed as we suspected, Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson was reportedly in a head-on collision during filming for the show. Says the Mirror, Clarkson "suffered minor injuries to his legs, hand and back." What, exactly, are minor injuries? Clarkson elaborates: “My right index finger looked like a burst sausage, my left shin was fatter than my thigh and my back felt like someone had driven over it with a pile-driver.” For her part, Clarkson's wife claims "my husband is fine." In other words, shut up Jeremy, and put on a band-aid. So, just for the record: Jeremy Clarkson is not dead. But, if he were, we've got a very nice obituary. [FinalGear]

<![CDATA[ Jeremy Clarkson Loves The ZR1, But Says It Began "To Disintegrate” After Three Days ]]> Writing in his weekly column in the ever-so-slightly left-of-center Sunday Times, Jeremy Clarkson expressed his love for the 2009 Corvette ZR1 before claiming “after three days the damn thing was beginning to disintegrate.” He may have just been "doing it wrong." Of course, this being Clarkson, the rest of the column was about the Chrysler Sebring, the War of Independence and his own insecurities that arise from him being a balding, fat idiot from a backwater nation who’s made a career on the tenuous appeal of his jackassery, so we don’t know if he was talking about the overall build quality (which we found to be peerless) or the interior (which we agree is unfittingly cheap for a $103,300 car). The rest of what Clarkson had to say and more of our analysis after the jump.

I spent most of my time in America this time in a new Corvette ZR1. It is a fabulous car. Mesmerisingly fast, good looking and amazing value. But after three days the damn thing was beginning to disintegrate. It made me growl with annoyance and despair.

The thing about the ZR1 is that it’s not just mesmerizingly fast, good-looking and an amazing value (at least here. In England it costs $200k), it’s built extremely well too. The aluminum chassis is as basic and as strong as it gets, every piece of running gear is of the highest specification available and the carbon fiber bodywork is some of the most well-laid, best-fitting we’ve ever seen.

Then there’s the interior, which we think is what Clarkson is talking about. It’s cheap...really cheap. Wonky plastic buttons abound, the 3ZR package brings ugly, atrociously stitched leather in poorly chosen color combinations and the steering wheel belongs in a Cobalt, not a 205 MPH supercar. But despite all that, it should fundamentally be capable of holding itself together. We just don’t know what Clarkson is on about. Do you? [via the Sunday Times]

<![CDATA[ Top Gear Australia's Ratings Slump Despite Holden Vs. Ford Shootout ]]> If we lived down under, we would have tuned in to SBS on Monday at 7:30 to watch the Top Gear Australia shootout between the iconic Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon...but we don't. Watch the clip and judge for yourself, but we think that even though it may not be quite as polished as the UK original, this segment wasn't all that bad. So why did the ratings for this second episode drop off significantly from the series premiere's, even though they were actually expected to go up?

About 674,000 viewers watched episode 2, which was about 250,000 fewer than the first episode. Even worse, it was the least-watched show in its time slot, and only the 26th most-watched show of the whole night. Nonetheless, everyone feels the new Top Gear still has potential to improve. After all, the first season with Clarkson at the helm of the BBC show wasn't amazing either. [TheAge, YouTube] (Thanks Brett!)

<![CDATA[ Top Gear Spotted Filming Episode In Vietnam ]]> Top Gear is expected to return next month; we've already seen that Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May will be coming to America for an episode, and it now appears they'll also be headed to Vietnam for a tour of duty. Unlike their American trip to the Bonneville salt flats in which the chaps drive a Corvette ZR1, Dodge Challenger SRT8 and Cadillac CTS-V, the journey in Vietnam is allegedly happening on motorcycle. Well, three motorcycles we presume. Either way it's not going to be an easy trip from Ho Chi Minh City in the south to Hanoi in the north, but it will definitely make for entertaining television.

<![CDATA[ Clarkson Drives Sebring Convertible, Declares It "Worst Car In The Entire World" ]]> Back when we shared the tale of the Perodua Kelisa-driving holdup men, some commenters took issue with the claim that the cheap Malaysian subcompact was #1 on Jeremy Clarkson's Most Hated Cars list. Fair enough- Clarkson hates a lot of cars… but his loathing for the Chrysler Sebring convertible plumbs new depths of bile. American cars (and foreign policy) are bad because Americans have no sense of history, according to Clarkson, and the Sebring is worst of all: "The insurgency problem in Baghdad and the wonky gearlever on the Chrysler Sebring. They are both caused by exactly the same thing." Too bad we don't know any history, or we'd be able to come back with some clever cracks about the map-drawing Brits who drew up the crazily arbitrary national boundaries that facilitate such lively ethnic conflict in the Middle East, the Balkans, and South Asia today. <![CDATA[ Top Gear's World War, From The German Perspective ]]> Remember when the blokes at Top Gear squared off against their German counterparts this past season? Well, now the German perspective from the show DMotor has aired. Hosted by none other than Sabine Schmitz—and a couple of other guys—the episode has been subtitled into English now by some intrepid fanboys at FinalGear. Even if you've seen the complementing episode of Top Gear already, it's interesting to see things from the very serious German angle. For instance, the idea of this drag race in the clip below was to match 3 cars fom Axis countries (Germany, Italy, Japan) against 3 cars from Allied countries (Britain, America, India). However, for some reason the DMotor hosts strangely fail to make any mention of this. In fact, there's not a single mention of WW2 in the entire program. Check it out for yourself in the video after the jump.

<![CDATA[ The Stig Breaks In Top Gear Australia's Test Track ]]> In case you missed it, the first episode of Top Gear Australia aired this week, and while we're still not sure how much we like the down under counterpart to the British original, it's still good entertainment. One thing we weren't sure of until we watched was what exactly the test track would look like. This clip shows Aussie Stig pounding out the first power-lap on the estimated 1.28-mile circuit in the new 2009 Porsche 911

Also, thanks to the fanboys at FinalGear, this map shows roughly what the Australian track looks like from a bird's eye satellite view. It seems to us like a pretty tight course, with some sections looking quite narrow, so it'll be interesting to see how real-world supercars like the RHD Ford GT fare.

This mess of pictures pretty much confirm that TGUK will be pushing the cars to their terminal velocity while making quips about Mormons and polygamy — and all while — umm — wearing baseball caps? Sure, whatever floats their British boats. It also looks like James May has taken a liking to a polished-up Shelby Cobra that was at the flats as well. <![CDATA[ UK Top Gear Comes Back To America, Tests Corvette ZR1, Challenger SRT8, CTS-V ]]> The crew from Top Gear UK, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May, are out in Nevada with no less than a Dodge Challenger SRT8, a 2009 Cadillac CTS-V and a 2009 Corvette ZR1, according to the forum fanboys over at FinalGear. The boys arrived in San Francisco on Wednesday and apparently proceeded to Reno where they were snapped hopping into their respective rides for what we can only assume will be an "America, Fuck Yeah" edition of Top Gear.

Obviously Clarkson grabbed the ZR1, Hammond got the keys to the CTS-V, and of course James May gets the outgunned Challenger SRT8. Pending the results of the show, we're assuming the ZR1 and CTS-V will be getting their just due on the world stage, while May will probably end up with the Challenger doing donuts and catching on fire. We have no idea when this episode will be hitting the airwaves, but when we find out it'll be pinned to our calenders. We eagerly await the metaphoric gymnastics Clarkson will be performing on the ZR1. Wonder how the Top Gear America guys feel about the British crew stealing their product thunder? (Hat tip to Paul!) <![CDATA[ Top Gear Reviews 2009 Corvette ZR1, America's Reputation At Stake ]]> Hopefully we'll all have the chance to see a full Top Gear top test of the 2009 Corvette ZR1 by Jeremy Clarkson, complete with big powerslides, loud proclamations of "Powwah!" and a power lap by the Stig. However, for the moment you'll have to be happy with Top Gear Magazine's Paul Horrell, who recently spent time behind the wheel of the new super-Vette. So does Horrell confirm our sentiments on the ZR1? Not quite. Horrell reckons "the dynamics are better than an Aston DBS, but you don't get the delicious precision of a (Ferrari) 599." Fair enough, but it's a good start for the ZR1 across the pond. Especially considering whether or not the rest of the European press agree with his overall positive assessment will likely play a big role in not just the success of the ZR1, but the European perception of American cars in general. The ZR1, in many ways, is our ambassador. And a hell of an ambassador it is.

<![CDATA[ Top Gear Australia Preview Plugs Hoonage ]]> Top Gear Australia, the Down-Under counterpart to everybody's favorite British show, is getting ready to kick off. The series premiere is September 29th, but to give you a taste of what's coming there's a new preview video you can watch here. In addition to the three new Aussie hosts, the show will also feature a clone of The Stig. At least, we're assuming he's a clone. But then The Stig is probably fast enough to drive Down Under from the UK and back between shows. Now we'll just have to see how Top Gear USA stacks up. [SBS]

<![CDATA[ Gumpert Apollo, Top Gear's Top Car, Officially Coming To America! ]]> According to the good folks at Streetfire.net, the Gumpert Apollo, the fastest super car around the Top Gear test track, is officially coming to America — and not just as a Euro-plated import. The German company announced this weekend a partnership with the Arizona-based tuning shop Evolution MotorSports to have them handle US-market final assembly of ten cars per year, along with performance validation of what's essentially a kit car (winks and nudges all around, as the customized Audi V8 engine and the rest of the drivetrain is installed when it gets here). They'll then be shipped off to the exclusive US dealer, European Touch in sunny Los Angeles. In addition to Streetfire's exclusive video of the unveil of the first Apollo, straight from docks, we've got an iPhone photo gallery below of said Apollo from when it entered the Evolution MotorSports shop. We'll have more on the story later — including an exclusive chat with Marc Fritzsche, Gumpert's production manager. In the meantime, hit the jump for the press release.

“Gumpert Partners with Evolution MotorSports for US Market!”
Tempe, AZ - Today Gumpert Sportswagenmanufaktur GmbH and Evolution MotorSports announced Gumpert has selected Evolution MotorSports in Tempe Arizona as their US market final assembly and Performance Validation center for the Gumpert Apollo.

Gumpert has selected Evolution MotorSports due to their understanding the balance between consumers expectation for a car that is competent for the racetrack and the ability to hold the exceptionally high standards that Gumpert will demand for the chassis delivered to the US market. Gumpert feels it is imperative for all US cars to be Performance Validated and comprehensibly checked, all before being delivered to the exclusive United State Dealer, European Touch in Huntington Beach California.

The Gumpert Apollo is a hand made coupe, available in a Street, GT or Race Car Configuration. The Apollo was recently featured on an episode of the UK Automotive show Top Gear where it was celebrated as the fastest around their test track over the last several seasons.

Gumpert representatives have stated that “The selection of Evolution MotorSports was an easy choice. Evolution MotorSports dedication to providing an excellent finished product, attention to detail and customer service have no rival that could come close to providing the finished product required.”

Todd Zuccone, Founder of Evolution MotorSports commented, “All we do are Insanely Tuned Luxury Exotics. We examined the Gumpert Apollo and I knew that EVOMS was the correct choice for Performance Validation. Something Evolution MotorSports customers have known for a long time. We are honored to have been selected by the Gumpert team."

Apollo Has Landed!

Pictured above is the first legal USA Gumpert Apollo departing the Gumpert headquarters in Altenburg, Germany. The Apollo left Germany the last week of August 2008 for a flight bound to Evolution MotorSports in the USA. Rubber on ground is planned after customs clearance before Labor Day!

About Gumpert:

The beginning – from the idea to the first model. In 2001 there was a vision of a new super sports car: A car, which combined the highest aerodynamics with unmatched driving capabilities. A street-legal car, ready for the race track. Last but not least, Mr. Gumpert aspired for the Apollo to offer the best value for money of any vehicle in this exclusive class. Starting from that vision, the technical parameters to be met were defined and the first designs of the car were drawn by Marco Vanetta. At the end of this process the first 1:4 scale model of the car was produced in 2002 – and the Apollo was born. From the first model to pre-production. To successfully develop this first model into a real car is an extensive process requiring significant development experience and technical ‘know-how’. To realize this vision, project management was taken over four years ago by Roland Gumpert. Coming from AUDI, Roland Gumpert has a long and impressive track record in car development and motor sport. During his time as Director of the AUDI Sport Department the Quattros from Ingolstadt won 25 races in the World Rally Championship and 4 World Rally Championship Titles. The GMG Sportwagenmanufaktur Altenburg GmbH was founded and Gumpert pressed ahead with the development of the apollo. In cooperation with the Technical University in Munich and the University of Applied Sciences in Ingolstadt constructional work, computer simulations, and finally wind tunnel tests were carried out. These research and development activities formed the basis for a first 1:1 scale model and finally the first two pre-production apollo. From pre-production to serial production. The first full-scale model of Apollo created a huge interest, both from the public and potential customers. To further develop the brand ‘apollo, GMG Sportwagen Manufaktur Altenburg became, in January 2005, Gumpert Sportwagenmanufaktur GmbH with Roland Gumpert as Managing Director. The new and striking brand is characterised by the griffin: this mythological creature – half lion, half eagle – is a symbol of strength and speed and not least a symbol of earth and air. <![CDATA[ Top Gear USA Host Tanner Foust Booted From Ferrari F1 Car ]]> No, Tanner Foust is not being considered as a replacement for Kimi Raikkonen at Scuderia Ferrari, but the Top Gear USA host spent some time behind the wheel of a Ferrari Formula One racer. Though by "seat time" we mean that he just sat down in the car, and was then asked politely to get out. Lame. Apparently is was all a shtick for the SPEED Channel show "Supercars Exposed," hosted by Tanner. Although, you know, it sort of makes his Lamborghini Reventón test drive seem really exciting. Visit Autofiends to read more as they lap up Tanner's every single waking moment.

<![CDATA[ Top Gear Invades London, Takes Tower Bridge With Tank ]]> Self-promotion is something the boys over at Top Gear have never had a problem with, and as part of the build-up to Top Gear Live, they've pulled out another stunt ready to become an instant classic: Driving a tank across the Tower Bridge following a line of supercars. Why'd they do it? Although initially we thought maybe Clarkson's ego finally convinced him an invasion of London made sense or perhaps Captain Slow finally found something to drive that he felt he could keep up with. No, in reality the Tower Bridge stunt was part of an attempt to promote the live stage show kicking off in the UK this October before it goes global. All we know is, although it was an interesting play, we'll keep our remote-controlled tank, thank you very much.

<![CDATA[ James May Drives A Whisky-Powered Radical SR4 ]]> Top Gear's very own Captain Slow was recently seen filling up this Radical SR4, not with fossil fuel, but Bruichladdich malt whisky. The demonstration will be part of Oz & James' Great British Adventure, in which May and wine critic Oz Clarke will tour around the country in a 1982 Rolls Royce Corniche convertible sampling British drinks. The show will air on BBC2 later this year, but for now we've got this amateur footage of the car starting up and running. Allegedly, the car was unmodified, but the fuel is the world's only whisky that's four times distilled. [laddieblog via FinalGear]

<![CDATA[ The Stig Blogs About The Nissan GT-R ]]> The-Stig-Nissan-GTR.jpgThe guys at Top Gear Magazine are doing a comparison test of supercars on the Isle of Man, and while they're at it they've been blogging their driving impressions. That's all well and good, but when it came time for everyone's favorite anonymous racing driver, The Stig, to tell us all what he thinks of the Nissan GT-R, there seemed to be something lost in translation.

It seems ol' Stiggy forgot to have his human language chip inserted before typing his thoughts down. Can anyone translate? To paraphrase, the Stig had this to say:

"............................."
And to think that some say he's actually a real person... pffft. [TopGear]

<![CDATA[ Top Gear Drives Mitsuoka Orochi, Proves It's Still The Ugliest Car In Existence ]]> If you haven't seen this week's blisteringly fast episode of Top Gear already and you plan on doing so without having plot details spoiled, you should probably ignore this post in its entirety. The rest of you should hit the jump.

On top of this week's star in a reasonably priced car snagging himself a whopper of a run around the track (click here to see where Jay Kay ended up on the board), The Stig whipping the Gumpert Apollo around the same track for a similarly monster run (click here to see where the Gumpert Apollo ended up on the board) and some hot Brit-on-German action with Sabine Schmitz and Tim Schrick, our main man James May had a chance to drive what we now believe to be the ugliest car in all the world. Yes, yes, we know the Mitsuoka Orochi snagged second place rather than the top spot on our list of the top ten ugliest foreign cars currently for sale, but after seeing it on the road in the above segment we think we may need to change our minds.

We fear the Orochi is what happens when you let a sushi chef design a car using his favorite fish as inspiration. The result, as you can see above, is positively revolting. But the ugly isn't just skin deep. It's slow; powered by a six from Toyota with an anemic 230 HP. The ride's apparently soft and rubbish. Predictably, May absolutely loved it. Hold on a moment while we run off to vomit. If you're able to stand it, there's a gallery below. Don't say we didn't warn you.

<![CDATA[ EXCLUSIVE: US Top Gear To Put Howie Mandel And Melanie B In Reasonably-Priced Kia Rio ]]> Well folks, we've now heard from two separate sources that the reasonably-priced car that Adam Carolla, Tanner Foust and Eric Stromer will drop stars behind the wheel of will be none other than the Kia Rio. But that's not all we've learned. Our sources also tell us the first two stars to sit behind the wheel will be the Dealin' Howie Mandel and Spice Girl Melanie B. And with that choice, the producers have now set aside any questions about whether they'll be kowtowing to the needs of the network. But hey, we've got an added surprise for you — some on-set pictures that have come by way of the Motive Mag/VWVortex Car Lounge. Remember, if you happen to be on-set tomorrow, snag us some shots.

<![CDATA[ Top Gear Unveils "Throne Of Gratitude," Honors UK Anti-Speed Camera City Councilman ]]> In this past week's episode of Top Gear, the boys awarded Peter Greenlagh, a city councilman in the little UK town of Swindon, the "Top Gear Trophy of Excellence" for taking a stand against speed cameras. Not only that, but Jezza announced the creation of the "Top Gear Throne of Gratitude," inviting Greenlagh to drop by the studio and have a seat anytime. Sure, it's not whipping the Nissan GT-R around the test track, but if anything deserves a standing ovation and bestowing of honorifics, a fight against speed cameras surely does. [SwindonWeb]

<![CDATA[ Nissan GT-R Laps Top Gear Track With A Time Of... ]]> After last week, when Clarkson took the GT-R across Japan, many wondered what it would do at the hands of Mr. Stig-oto. Well, guess what they did this week? Don't worry, we're not going to spoil the surprise of The Stig taking the 2009 Nissan GT-R around the Top Gear test track. You'll have to watch the video for that if you're not willing to wait for "other means." Or, if for some reason the video's not working, you can click here for a screen shot of the board post-race. All we know is, it's called Godzilla for a reason — and it's because this "Datsun" is monstrous.

<![CDATA[ Top Gear Races JDM Nissan GT-R Vs. Bullet Train, We Spoil Winner Below The Jump ]]> In this week's episode of Top Gear, Jeremy Clarkson takes a JDM Nissan GT-R for a bit of a race against a Japanese Bullet Train holding Hammond and May — with both going coast-to-coast to Tokyo. The winner and the rest of the show re-cap below the jump. And yes, it's a spoiler, so if you're still waiting to watch it, don't even think of going there.

Clarkson-Top-Gear-Nissan-GTR.jpg
As you'd expect — they both got lost. But, as you'd also expect, the GT-R beat the boys in public transit — by 3 minutes and 12 seconds.

But, despite the win, Clarkson struggled to love the GT-R — the way it looks, the way it drives and for being "without soul." He just "...wished it would — at road speeds — run its hand down my pants and give it a little rummage."

But, in addition to Godzilla, Clarkson took the world's most beautiful car on earth* — the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione — around the Top Gear track and thought it was absolute rubbish. While that may or may not be the case, we're in total agreement with Clarkson on at least one thing: "Buying this car for it's dynamic abilities is like buying a porn film for its plot." We couldn't agree more, Jezza.

*As judged by myself, of course.

<![CDATA[ Telegraph: James May, Richard Hammond "May Leave" Top Gear Unless BBC Meets Salary Demands ]]> Hammond-May-Top-Gear.jpgThe UK's Telegraph is telling us today James May and Richard Hammond, two of Top Gear's threesome of hosts, have yet to sign new contracts recently presented to them by the BBC. According to the UK daily, they're holding out for the same multi-million pound deal received last month by Clarkson in his new contract. The Telegraph even goes so far as to say the two "may leave" the show if their contract demands aren't met. However, the only source they've been able to get a quote from on the record is none other than James May, who very clearly states
"The only reason I haven't signed my contract yet is because it has not yet been finalized. The current one doesn't expire until the end of July. I'm sure a new one will be sorted out soon. I'm not stomping around about Jeremy's contract with BBC Worldwide. Quite frankly, I couldn't give a **** about it."
But, the Telegraph's sources say different.

The paper's unnamed sources claim

"the presenters of the hit BBC Two series had not yet signed their new contracts even though their current agreements expire at the end of the month...there has been "a meltdown" in negotiations and that the pair "turned down flat" the first offer from the BBC. There has been a lot of pulling out of hair, a Mexican stand-off. For the first time it is possible that one or both might leave."
OK, obviously it'd be horrible if the two were to leave. But there really doesn't seem to be much of an indication they're doing anything but bargaining for larger contracts — something that given the pound amount Clarkson's pulling in, is well within their rights. Who these unnamed sources the Telegraph is quoting is anyone's guess — but ours is it's someone's agent — or Clarkson — attempting to play some one-upsmanship on behalf of the soon-to-be-contractless duo. Not a bad ploy if you ask us. We'll be watching the story nonetheless. (Hat tip to Chris!) [via Telegraph]
