down on the street
Welcome to
Down On The Street, where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. You know, after 379 vehicles in this series, we've had just
one Jeep, and that was a
2-wheel-drive mail-carrier's DJ5? Oh, sure, we saw
this 1945 GPW 'Jeep', but that was built by
Ford! Meanwhile, we've had five IHC Scouts. What's the deal here- is Alameda's Navy-town heritage enforcing some unspoken anti-Army bias that results in old Jeeps getting vandalized? I got no idea, folks, but I knew I had to go out and find the oldest street-parked Jeep
within easy walking distance of my house in town!

The new Jeep Wrangler is a damn fine off-road vehicle straight from the factory, but a 202 HP V6 just doesn't quite fit the bill for the folks at
American Expedition Vehicles. Remember, this is the same group of guys who built the
Hemi-powered SR-392 Roadster and the amazing
Brute conversion kit that'll let you turn your Wrangler into an honest-to-goodness Jeep truck. This year at SEMA AEV'll be showing their latest and greatest new toy — the custom shop's dropped a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 into the evergreen off-roader...and then tosses us the keys for an exclusive first drive. That's right, they let us loose in this monster of an off-roader — outfitted with their complete HEMI conversion kit, a Flowmaster exhaust, an Nth Degree three-inch suspension lift, 35-inch BFG Mud Terrain KM2s on a set of their own wheels, 4.88 rear gears, their all-steel heat-extractor hood and a beefy front winch bumper of their own design. The result: A seriously badass Wrangler.

Even the
Jeep Patriot is getting the VIP treatment for next month's
Paris Motor Show, arriving in Mopar-accessorized Back Country regalia. The Patriot Back Country concept gets a special coat of Optic Green paint along with a roof-mounted cargo basket, off-road lighting, 18" wheels and tires and blackout treatments at key exterior points. Inside, the gussied-up Patriot receives special urethane easy-clean seat material inspired by wetsuits. Overall, the Back Country package seems to complement the Patriot's interior refresh pretty nicely, and from certain no-doubt carefully chosen camera angles, the Patriot Back Country sort of
vaguely resembles an older Toyota Land Cruiser from the rear three-quarter view. The other views...not so much.

Top Ten Used SUVs
Since owners are fleeing their SUVs like rats from a sinking ship, it seems like a great time to put together a list of the top used SUV bargains. Luckily,
Popular Mechanics has put together just such a list. After all, some people out there actually need a purposeful wagon to take them off-road or help them haul a trailer and family. As such, there isn't a single crossover on the list, but you can be assured that these rugged trucks will get the job done without forcing you to work a second job. We've even found an example of each for sale on Ebay, to give you an idea of what's really on the market. Oh, and we've also included one very
Jalopnik-approved used SUV that may or may not be a bargain. Check out the list below.

barack obama
Liz Murphy of Naperville, Illinois discovered while signing papers on a 2000
Jeep Grand Cherokee that the vehicle had been owned by then state senator
Barack Obama. Local paper
The Naperville Sun reports that Murphy was happy to discover her Jeep had been celebrity-owned, but now that Obama has a chance at the White House, she's hoping to cash in a little. Murphy plans to sell the Grand Cherokee after the November elections with an eye toward getting at least above the average trade-in value. She also reports that Obama's firm handshake is evidenced on the interior of the Jeep, as a left-hand mark is imprinted on the steering wheel. Says Murphy, "Every once in a while I'll run my hands over the top of the steering wheel and say, 'Wow, this guy had a grip.'" While we're optimistic, the jury is still out. [

2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8
Based on spy photos the
Detroit News appears to have received from a reader, Jeep's hot-rod mid-size SUV may soon be able to pull your boat. According to their report, the
2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 has been spotted with the dual center-mounted exhaust outlets moved to one-per-side, and the test mule was seen pulling a trailer. Jeep hasn't revealed any power numbers for the next Jeep SRT8, but we have to believe they should at least match the current Grand Cherokee SRT8's 425 HP and 420 lb-ft of torque. Last time we looked that was plenty of pulling power for most suburban enthusiasts. [

2009 jeep patriot
The Jeep Compass (the Jeep MK platform for the ladies) and Patriot (the Jeep MK platform for the boys) will be getting revised interiors with softer lines for 2009, according to a first look at some Mopar dealer catalogs scanned by the Chrysler forum fan-boys at
Allpar. Gone are most of the hard-edged "plastic box" features that made up the first-gen mini-Jeeps, replaced by a more fluid-looking motif still using the same basic layout. Compass pictured above; Patriot interior after the jump.
