Audi RS6 Avant or Audi R8, Which Is The Fastest?

Though Audi claims that both the Audi RS6 Avant and Audi R8 are equally fast to 62 mph and 124 mph, we've always been skeptical as to whether or not the Überwagen of our dreams could actually compete. Thankfully, the folks at EVO mag had a copy of each to test out. The bottom line? Almost. More »

Commenter Of The Day: Mathbeard Edition

As most of you probably know, tonight is the night that Barack Obama addresses the Democratic National Convention and the nation as the first African-American nominated for president by a major party. His victory was a result of an extended and often complicated primary that involved delegates, superdelegates, half-delegates and Guam. In this uncertain environment, NBC's Chuck Todd turned into a star political analyst because of his ability to understand and explain what was happening. With a grasp of delegate math and an impressive collection of facial hair, he's earned the moniker Mathbeard. But however smart Mathbeard may be, he couldn't have explained the process better to Jalops than Graverobber did today in the Volvo 740 post. More »

Tata Nano And Other Affordable Vehicles Could Increase Indian Road Deaths To 150,000 Per Year

The Indian Transport Ministry estimates that the number of fatalities from road accidents could climb 50% to 150,000 a year by 2015 due to the rapid growth of vehicle ownership in the country. The World Bank estimates that at current levels (100,000 per year), India’s mortality rate is 14 for every 10,000 vehicles — seven times that of the developed world. Annual passenger vehicle sales in India are expected to reach two million units by 2010, double the current number, largely thanks to the massive increase in the number of affordable vehicles. The Tata Nano — at $2,500, the world’s cheapest new car — will make up a quarter of that increase alone; 250,000 of them will be built per year.

Chevy Volt Interior Photo Lifted From Internal GM Presentation, Looks Like an iPod

These shots of a production Chevy Volt interior have leaked from a GM internal presentation. Immediately apparent is the glossy white iPod-esque IP with flip-up nav/charge status display. There’s also a prominent center-mounted computer-like on/off button, but we don’t know if this will start the car or just the computer system. The 2011 Chevy Volt will be GM's first plug-in hybrid and a huge risk for the company; so does this interior make the grade?

2010 BMW V5 Spotted During Hot-Weather Testing

The artist previously known as the 2010 BMW V5 has been spotted during hot-weather testing and continues to confound everyone of its raison d'etre. Since it's no longer called the V5 apparently, we're just going to refer to it as the Mutt, since it's a mix of pretty much everything. The BMW Mutt appears to be about the size of a 5-series, but sporting a fifth-door hatch and no rear decklid. Completing the Mutt's look is a wide, BMW 7-series-style grille and enough cladding to make a styling guess nearly impossible. Seems to us BMW couldn't be happy with just the niche-UV BMW X6, so they're branching out to blur other segments. Full dazed-and-confused spy report below.

Volkswagen Tops Ford In Global Sales For First Half Of 2008, Shouts "We're Number Three!"

Volkswagen put out a horn-tooting presser today touting their delivery of 3.31 million vehicle worldwide in the first half of 2008, versus Ford's 3.22 million sales. Those figures mark the first time ever that the kids in Wolfsburg have cracked the top three worldwide in sales, and VW is gleefully rubbing it in Dearborn's face, stating "rival Ford had to settle for fourth position." Enjoy it now, Volkswagen; there's still six months to go. Never underestimate the willingness of American automakers to offer $20,000 cash rebates just to beat you in the last two weeks of the year, even if it does mean receivership. USA! USA! Shelby GT500KR Road Trip, Chapter IV: Death Valley Car Spy Photographers Are NOT Fooled By Manufacturer Plates

It was the Wert-spotting by Jalopnik reader Nick outside the Shelby HQ gave us an idea for our run through Death Valley yesterday on our Shelby GT500KR Road Trip. Would the car spies spending the summer months in the Valley of non-Life find the GT500KR with manufacturer plates a compelling enough target to shoot — perhaps thinking it to be some kind of development mule? After a quick 150 mile jaunt through the Valley's 110-degree temperatures yesterday afternoon, we found the answer to be "No." More »

$2,750 Maserati Pen Will Not Help You Write Faster

Feel like going all out and indulging in obnoxious luxury? Grab yourself a $2,750 sterling-silver Maserati-branded pen. Yeah, that's plenty obnoxious. This pen heralds from Bologna, Italy, and the hand of Armando Simoni, apparently a famed luxo-pen crafter. The Maserati pen comes in roller ball ($2,500 — for the plebes) and fountain ($2,750) styles. Each features a Maserati trident and Maserati signature fender vents etched into the body and cap. 1,200 of the fountain pens and 714 roller balls are to be made, for a total of 1914 — the year Maserati was founded. We expect you to hate on it as you so ruthlessly did the Maserati Quattroporte [AutoWeek]

MG Plans Four Model Range Beyond TF, Future Of Longbridge “Assured”

Shanghai Automotive plans to introduce four new MG models to the UK market starting next year. The company just relaunched production of the MG TF with a limited edition run of 500 vehicles, but its plans to bring MG to the USA have fallen through. All four models will be built at Longbridge, which is currently having its production capacity expanded with new staff and equipment to handle the task. Shanghai (which merged with Nanjing last year) claims this assures the future of the historically troubled facility. But what new models is MG bringing to market? Will the just be based on sub-par Chinese vehicles? Can MG really find sales success? More »
