Hoon of the Weekend: More on the Smoking Volvo 740

The Swedish nuts at Hedberg and Streetpower released another video of their batshit Volvo 740 in action. They've apparently tweaked 530 horepower and 527 ft-lbs of torque out of this particular brick, which we first featured back in the early days of Jalopnik hoonage. They're not bad behind the wheel, either.

  • Now that is a speecy Swedish might ball!

  • So how many tires you suppose those guys go through in a month?

  • That 8.05, 155 is in what units and what distance? Because it doesn't launch like a 8sec 1/4mi car, but those don't look like drag radials.

    Anyway, drift-bork-bork-bork!

  • Eh... I dunno. Definately some insane stuff there. But it's realllllly hard to get excited about a Volvo. Even one with 530hp. And I'm trying.

  • I love how they they kept the bodywork dead stock and even used Volvo-esque aftermarket wheels.

    The ultimate sleeper.

  • Turd Blossom: I agree it didn't look like an 8 second 1/4 mile, but, I mean, what other units of time could they possibly be using? Its certainly not 8 minutes or hours.
And if it was an 8 second quarter, 155 mph sounds like a believable trap speed.

  • 8 sec quarter at 155? Certainly with double the horsepower and a drag-race suspension.

That's an awesome car, but something doesn't add up.

  • Funny. I spent about a half an hour looking into the engine compartment of a 1984 Volvo 760 Turbo at the junkyard today. Looks like you really *can* wring some HP out of that setup. I bet it has a switch for extra boost.

Just think of the expression of the other drivers face when you blow by him in a Volvo.

  • C'mon! A 530 HP Volvo is freaking awesome. A 530 HP YUGO would be freaking awesome. As would a 530hp Pinto. Tough crowd in here. Reminds me of a recent car show where some bozo comes up and starts breaking my balls about my car. He shut right the hell up when I asked him what he was working on. Nothing, evidently. Always respect those who take the time to wring maximum hoonage out of any vehicle. Oh - and that looks like an eighth mile to me. What's with that portable timing rig? Every group of hoons should have one.

  • 1/8th mile and km/h?

  • Yup, gotta be the 1/8th mile. Run 8s there and you'll be in the high 12s in the quarter. That's more like it.

  • Damn i'd love to be racing that on Hall street!

  • So this is evidently how they spend the long, cold and dark winternights in Sweden!

  • Hefty Volvo!

The car park/trailer lot hoonage was pretty sick. It's one thing to do that shizz on a air strip or track, but another when you have lightpoles as "guardrails".

And since there was a recent thread about spectator safety at rallies, was anyone else on the edge of their seat at that carshow demo? If the dude highsided it just once, there would have been some bad crowd damage. Yikes, Olaf.

  • I remember years ago a fella here in the Pacific Northwest named John Lane who had a Volvo 262 with a turbo'd V6 under the hood. Ran it in rally events, although he mostly broke driveline components. Why? Because it was pushing out better than 600hp, and 504 ft/lbs of torque -- at the rear wheels. Quite entertaining.

If you do a google search for "Fire Breathing Monster" and "John Lane" you can get some interesting accounts, plus a picture or two.

  • "Och skapligt med laddtryck is the shit!" indeed...

I've always had a closet affection for the 700-series, and this just confirms the secret hoonage capabilities cloaked within that dead-unsexy skin. I'd like to see this in a wagon, please (or better yet, one of the Bertone 780 coupes... mmm, boxalicious!)

  • 530 hp car under 3000lbs. do the math.
Stock the car is only 3000lb, but it you can easily get out 300# by removing all the airbag junk.
Volvo's are actually light cars for their class, they are just usually underpowered and "look" heavy.

  • How did they fit the larger calipers and rotors on and keep those "factory" looking rims? Cause you would make sure you had beefy brakes if you knew your Volvo was now putting out 53hp right?
Maybe it's just me being a little overly cautious.
